Adult Day Services
Full Definition
Adult day programs serve two primary functions: providing therapeutic programming and social engagement for seniors with cognitive or physical limitations, and giving family caregivers a reliable break during the week. Programs typically operate Monday through Friday and may offer half-day or full-day options.
Adult day health care programs (which provide health monitoring, medication management, and rehabilitation services in addition to activities) are licensed by Texas HHSC. Standard adult day programs may operate with lighter regulation.
Texas Medicaid’s STAR+PLUS program covers adult day health services for eligible members. VA programs fund adult day health care for qualifying veterans. Private pay costs typically range from $60 to $120/day in Texas. For families considering whether a loved one can remain at home, adult day services often extend the viability of home-based care significantly.
