Home Modification for Aging in Place

Home modifications — grab bars, ramp installation, bathroom safety equipment, and environmental adaptations — allow seniors to remain safely at home longer by reducing fall risk and compensating for physical limitations.

Full Definition

Home modifications are structural and environmental adaptations to a person’s home that reduce fall risk, improve accessibility, and compensate for physical or cognitive limitations — enabling seniors to remain safely in their own homes longer than would otherwise be possible.

High-priority home modifications for fall prevention include: grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet (one of the most cost-effective fall prevention interventions), tub transfer bench or roll-in shower conversion, non-slip mats and flooring, adequate lighting particularly at night, removal of trip hazards (area rugs, clutter, cords), and stairway handrails on both sides.

For seniors with mobility limitations, modifications may include: ramp installation for wheelchair or walker access, doorway widening, lever-style door handles, raised toilet seats, lower countertops, and stair lifts. For those with cognitive impairment, safety-focused modifications include stove knob covers or automatic shut-off devices, door alarms, and medication lock boxes.

Paying for home modifications is a challenge for many families. Medicare covers some modifications when recommended as part of home health occupational therapy. Some Texas Medicaid HCBS waiver programs include home modification benefits. VA programs cover modifications for eligible veterans. Texas Area Agencies on Aging often coordinate local programs that provide modifications for low-income seniors at reduced or no cost.
