Occupational Therapy for Seniors

Occupational therapy for seniors addresses the ability to perform activities of daily living, recommends adaptive equipment and home modifications, and supports cognitive compensation strategies.

Full Definition

Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on enabling people to perform the activities (or “occupations”) that matter to them — which for older adults means primarily activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental ADLs, and meaningful daily activities. OT is a core component of post-acute rehabilitation and an important resource for community-dwelling seniors seeking to maintain independence.

In post-acute settings (skilled nursing facilities and inpatient rehabilitation), occupational therapists work with seniors on ADL retraining after stroke, hip fracture, and other events: learning to dress with one-sided weakness, adapting to vision changes, relearning safe kitchen activities, and using adaptive equipment (grab bars, raised toilet seats, dressing aids, adaptive utensils) to compensate for functional limitations.

OT’s role in cognitive rehabilitation is increasingly recognized: therapists use cognitive compensation strategies and structured routines to help seniors with mild dementia or post-stroke cognitive changes manage their daily activities more safely. Home safety evaluations — conducted by OTs in the person’s actual home — identify and address fall hazards and recommend modifications that reduce injury risk.

For families, an OT evaluation before a parent returns home from the hospital can be one of the most valuable post-acute steps — identifying whether the home environment is safe and what modifications are needed before discharge, rather than discovering problems after a fall.
