Memory Care
Full Definition
Memory care units and standalone memory care communities are purpose-built environments for people who need supervision and support due to cognitive impairment. The physical environment typically features secured exits (to prevent wandering), reduced sensory confusion, and safe outdoor spaces. Staff receive specific training in dementia communication, behavioral management, and person-centered dementia care.
Texas requires assisted living facilities that market themselves as memory care or Alzheimer’s care to obtain an Alzheimer’s Certification from HHSC, which includes specific staffing ratios, physical environment requirements, and staff training mandates.
Memory care in Texas typically costs $4,500 to $8,500/month, depending on level of care and community type. It is not covered by Medicare. Private pay, long-term care insurance, and Texas Medicaid STAR+PLUS (for eligible residents) are the primary funding sources.
