What Is Independent Living? | Texas Senior Care Glossary

Senior Care Settings

Independent Living

Independent living is a residential community for seniors who are largely self-sufficient but prefer a maintenance-free lifestyle with social programming, meals, and community amenities — without the medical services or assistance with daily activities provided in assisted living.

Full Definition

Independent living communities — also called senior apartments, retirement communities, or active adult communities — offer housing, meals, activities, transportation, and housekeeping for seniors who do not need personal care assistance. They are not licensed medical facilities and provide no assistance with activities of daily living as part of the standard service package.

In Texas, independent living communities vary from modest apartment complexes to resort-style campuses. Many offer tiered pricing based on apartment size and meal plans. Some are part of Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) that offer a continuum from independent to skilled nursing care on one campus.

Independent living is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Costs typically range from $2,000 to $5,000/month in Texas, though luxury communities can cost significantly more. The decision to transition from independent living to assisted living often happens gradually as care needs increase.
