An elder law attorney is a lawyer who focuses on the legal, financial, and planning needs of older adults and their families. While general estate planning attorneys handle wills and trusts, elder law attorneys have additional specialized expertise in the intersection of aging, disability, healthcare, and public benefits.

Common situations that call for an elder law attorney include: Medicaid planning and asset protection before or during a long-term care placement; guardianship or conservatorship proceedings for a parent who can no longer manage their own affairs; drafting or updating powers of attorney and advance directives; VA pension benefits applications; special needs planning for a disabled family member; and handling estate issues after death.
